I recently reconnected with my old friend Chandler Fausset, who runs Aligned Media Productions here in Utah. Chandler and I have known each other for nearly 20. Our connection started through church and neighborhood friendship, but it evolved into something really special through a creative project Chandler did about my story of perseverance after my accident.

The Making of a Documentary: From Reluctance to Recognition

About 18 months after my accident, Chandler approached me in his senior year of high school to create a documentary for a multimedia class project. Initially, I was hesitant and didn't really want to be part of it. But Chandler’s persistence and genuine interest wore me down, and I agreed. He was new to filming and editing, armed with limited resources—just a GoPro and an older digital camera—but his passion was undeniable.

Chandler’s teacher was instrumental in helping him shape the project. Together, we decided to include interviews with the emergency responders, family, trainers, and friends who had supported me through my journey. It was special to see how many people wanted to contribute and tell this story. When the documentary won second place in the Utah High School Film Festival, it was a magical moment for us both. That recognition was a testament to Chandler’s dedication and the power of the story.

A Follow-Up Project and Milestones

Years later, Chandler came back to film another project during a pivotal moment in my recovery—when I was able to complete a wildland firefighter PAC test, marking a major achievement in regaining my mobility. Filming that day was emotional for both of us. I struggled with the altitude, but pushing through and finishing reminded me of how far I’ve come from those early days in the wheelchair.

Racing and Personal Triumphs

Our conversation brought up many memorable moments, like my first handcycle marathon and races with amazing athletes such as Muffy Davis. I reminisced about the challenges, like hitting the wall during my first marathon and having Victoria as my supportive crew, and moments of exhilaration like reaching speeds of 58 miles per hour during the St. George Marathon. These stories represent more than just races—they symbolize resilience and determination.

The Evolution of Aligned Media

Chandler’s passion for storytelling evolved from those early days of student projects to leading Aligned Media Productions. The company specializes in high-quality video content for fitness, automotive, healthcare, and more. Chandler emphasized the importance of storytelling over just videography—really understanding the heart of the message and connecting with the audience on a deeper level. His work spans from making ads for companies like Jiffy Lube and eBay Motors to inspiring documentaries, and it’s clear he pours his heart into every project.

Creative Growth and Family Connections

Chandler shared how working with his dad on various projects became cherished time, strengthening their relationship. He also shared stories about filming in Europe, including a memorable week in Berlin where they connected with the local church community. The idea of blending family, work, and passion really resonated with me, as I reflect on the importance of my own support network through recovery and leadership.

Humor, Friendship, and Enduring Bonds

Throughout our conversation, we shared laughs about mutual friends like Nate Jones and quirky moments from our years of friendship. These personal connections underscore the value of relationships that uplift and sustain us through challenges. It’s clear that behind the scenes of any success is a web of support, encouragement, and genuine human connection.

This chat with Chandler reminded me how resilience, storytelling, and deep connections intertwine. From student projects to full-fledged media production, it’s been an inspiring journey to witness, and I’m grateful for the friendships and stories that fuel our growth. For anyone facing trials or pursuing their passion, remember: perseverance and authentic connection make all the difference.

At the end of this post, I’m sharing Chandler’s original documentary video from his high school project—a heartfelt piece that captures the spirit of overcoming and hope.
