For months, I've been putting this off—but today felt like the right day to finally start. It’s January 20, 2025, and this is the very first episode of my new podcast, Double Helix. The inspiration behind Double Helix comes from a couple of important reflections about how deeply connected we all are—to each other, to the world around us, and even to our own biology and DNA.
Connection Beyond Social Bonds
When we think of connections, we often imagine social interactions—friends, family, colleagues. But connections stretch far beyond that. They influence our psychological, emotional, and physical health. Even our DNA, the very code that shapes us, interacts with our environment and experiences in ways that affect our overall wellness. Through this podcast, I want to explore those various layers of connection and how they impact our health and lives.
Not an Expert, Just Curious
I want to be clear: I am not an expert in health, psychology, or genetics—I’m probably the least educated person in these fields. But I am deeply curious and passionate about learning and sharing insights from experts and real people alike. I’ll be inviting guests ranging from neurologists and psychologists to nutritionists and those who have experienced transformative connections in their own lives. It’s going to be a raw, unfiltered conversation, peeling back layers on how connection shapes us.
My Own Struggles and Stories
I’ve come to realize that while I’m great at connecting in my work as a salesperson and public speaker—engaging with rooms full of people—when it comes to family and close relationships, things are messier. I come from a family with four brothers and have a wonderful wife and kids, yet sometimes the dynamics get complicated. I’m going to be open about my missteps, foot-in-mouth moments, and how connection is a continuous challenge and gift.
A Story That Changed Me
I vividly recall a life-altering accident about 18 years ago, when I fell 40 feet while cutting trees after a chainsaw accident. The hospital experience that followed was a profound lesson in connection. One doctor, initially cold and distant, earned my trust over time by patiently listening to my fears and pain. His effort to connect with me in that vulnerable state transformed my healing process and strengthened my relationship with my wife, showing me firsthand the power of connection in health and recovery.
The Mission of Double Helix
This podcast is my journey to understand that power of connection. Whether it’s the social support we rely on in tough times, the mental and emotional bonds that keep us grounded, or the even deeper biological connections within our own bodies—these are essential for our wellbeing. I hope sharing stories, insights, and expert knowledge will help both me and you navigate life’s challenges and build stronger, healthier connections.
Join Me on This Journey
I plan to keep this podcast real and raw. Expect little editing and a transparent view of how connections shape lives. I invite you to join the conversation, share your stories, ask questions, and explore with me the science and human experience behind true connection.
Thank you for starting this journey with me. Here’s to healthier, deeper connections and the healing they bring.
