In this deeply personal episode of KneeToKnee, Mark Marrott and Joel Steedman explore the trans-formative process of healing after a catastrophic 40-foot fall. Beyond the physical injuries and surgeries, Mark shares how shifting mindsets, supportive relationships, and new purpose paved the way for his inspiring recovery.

Redefining Relationships Post-Injury
Mark opens about the difficult transition from husband and wife to patient and caregiver, then back again — a process requiring patience and emotional resilience. He credits his wife Victoria’s unwavering support: "She's amazing… at first, it was easy for me to let go and accept help. But as I gained strength, the hard part was letting her step back. That transition was tough."
Mindset: Choosing Hope Over Despair
Early in recovery, Mark made a conscious choice “not to feel sorry for myself,” focusing instead on possibilities. Therapy helped him confront guilt and accept responsibility: "I had tremendous guilt, taking 100% responsibility for the accident. Therapy helped me bear that burden and get past it."
Social support plays a vital role in recovery, shown to improve physical and psychological outcomes after trauma (Rees & Smith, 2010).
Getting Active: From First Races to Handcycling
Remarkably, Mark participated in races just five months post-accident, competing in over 20 including marathons. A key inspiration was Paralympian Kurt Brinkman: "Meeting Kurt changed everything. He was a gold medalist who showed me what was still possible, even in a wheelchair."
Physical activity and goal-setting significantly aid mental health and life satisfaction in those with chronic injuries (Holt-Lunstad et al., 2010).
Motivational Speaking: Turning Pain into Purpose
Mark’s journey led to motivational speaking, focusing on expanding one's “circle of concern” to what can be controlled: "My message is about focusing on what's possible, not what's lost. That shift helped me find purpose through service."
Childhood Lessons and Lifelong Resilience
An early hospital stay with leg bone disease and a friendship with a cheerful boy named Michael taught Mark important perspective on struggle: "Michael never had the chance to play outside like I did, yet he saw every day as amazing. That shaped how I face hardship—to find joy despite pain."
Final Message: Connection, Support, and Purpose
This episode closes with a fundamental truth: thriving after trauma requires connection, support, and purpose. Mark encourages those struggling:
"Find someone who gets it, who loves you, and let them help you. Service and connection heal alongside therapy."
