I want to share a deeply personal episode featuring two incredible people who played a pivotal role in my healing journey after my accident in 2008—Kaylee Whitehouse Jenkins and Jeff Dodd. Both were part of the trauma care team at Intermountain Medical Center who supported me through some of the toughest days of my life.
Meeting Kaylee and Jeff
Kaylee was a nurse on the trauma step-down unit, one of her first years in nursing when she first met me. She later moved to work ICU in Anchorage, Alaska, but we still keep in touch. Jeff, a physical therapist assistant, had been dedicated to trauma services for nearly two decades, with a passion for patient care and recovery. Their combined compassion and expertise helped build the foundation for my recovery.
The Accident and Early Trauma Care
On April 26, 2008, I fell 40 feet after a chainsaw accident damaged my safety harness. I was one of the first major trauma patients in the newly opened Intermountain Medical Center, where I was treated under the watchful care of Dr. Hillyard and the trauma team. Those early days were foggy, filled with multiple surgeries, uncertainty about whether my leg could be saved, and the rough realities of fixators and intense pain.
The Human Side of Trauma Care
Kaylee and Jeff recalled how patients like me, young and previously healthy, faced overwhelming fear alongside physical pain. The trauma team had to simplify complex medical scenarios into understandable terms and support patients emotionally through terrifying experiences. They saw it as “just another day at work,” but for me, it was life-altering. The personalized care and attention they gave brought much-needed humanity to that critical time.
One vivid memory was when Dr. Hillyard recognized I was having a panic attack triggered by being near a window, reminiscent of my fall height, and thoughtfully moved me and talked me through it. Moments like that revealed the depth of care behind the clinical side of medicine.
The Challenge of Rehab and Physical Therapy
Jeff talked about those pivotal early steps in physical therapy—helping me sit up after two weeks flat, knowing there was a strong chance I’d faint. He prepared me for those moments and was right there to support me through them. That gentle but firm encouragement was crucial in my progression from a broken body to gradual functional recovery.
Keeping Family in the Loop
The importance of supporting not just the patient but also family was evident. Kaylee and Jeff engaged with my wife Victoria, helping her understand what was coming and involving her in the care process. That support helped us communicate and navigate shock and trauma together. Caregiver well-being was recognized as vital to my healing and their ability to care for me effectively.
Humor and Connection in Hard Times
Despite the gravity of trauma care, both Kaylee and Jeff emphasized the role of humor and relationship-building in healing. Jeff was known for making even the most delirious ICU patients laugh, lightening the mood and distracting them from their pain and confusion. Such human moments brought relief and made the intense environment a little easier for everyone involved.
Patient Inspiration and Lasting Impact
Jeff shared how I became an inspiration to other patients, visiting them during their own healing journeys. That opportunity to give back was therapeutic for me, helping me move beyond being just a patient to becoming a source of hope. Our ongoing contact is a testament to the lasting bonds formed through shared trauma and recovery.
Reflections on Healing and Gratitude
Looking back, I am forever grateful to Kaylee, Jeff, Dr. Hillyard, and the entire trauma team whose tireless work and genuine care made my healing possible. Their dedication shows how connection and compassion multiply the impact of medical skill. I appreciate how they continue to care for others and carry the weight of patients’ hardest days with them.
This episode is a powerful reminder that healing is as much about human connection as it is about medicine. I am honored to have had Kaylee and Jeff as part of my journey, and I hope their stories inspire gratitude for the often unseen heroes in healthcare.
Thank you for reading and for sharing in this reflection on resilience, care, and connection.
